Media Production

New technologies have created new possibilities for children to become creative producers of media, rather than simply ‘consumers’. Media production is a key element of media education, both in schools and in more informal settings. We are interested in how children learn to make their own media products, and the kinds of ‘literacies’ that they can develop through doing so. We are also keen to employ such ‘creative’ methods in research, as a way of enabling children to represent their own concerns and identities. We have conducted several research and evaluation projects in this area over the past fifteen years; and have several research students working on different aspects of children’s media production. We also teach on practically-based modules on the MA in Media, Culture and Communication.
