Games

Computer games are an increasingly important aspect of many children’s lives; and they are coming to be seen as an important resource for use in education. Yet there are fundamental questions to be asked about how children engage with, and learn from, games; and about the kinds of critical knowledge and creative abilities they should be developing in relation to this new medium. The Centre has conducted several major research projects in this area, looking at the textual form of mainstream computer games and the ‘gaming cultures’ that surround them; as well as potential applications in education, not least for children learning to create their own games. We teach a module on games in the MA in Media, Culture and Communication, and have hosted several recent seminars and events in this area.
