The category of ‘youth’ has been a focus of attention for academic researchers for more than a century. Successive generations of sociologists and psychologists have sought to define the unique characteristics of youth culture, and its place within society. However, much of this research remains focused on local or national settings. Young people are now growing up in a world in which they have significantly greater access to globalised media: media companies are increasingly constructing and targeting global markets, and young people in particular are using new media to form and sustain transnational connections. Many young people have also experienced global migration, and live in communities in which a wide range of global cultures mix and cross-fertilise.
This seminar series focuses on young people’s consumption, use and production of media and popular cultural forms (including audio-visual, digital and online media, popular music and fashion) in the context of cultural and economic globalisation. Through sharing ongoing research and debating key theoretical and empirical issues in the field, the series aims to develop an international network that will particularly support postgraduate students and early career researchers. It also seeks to promote a dialogue between researchers and practitioners in relevant fields such as education, youth work, media regulation, and the cultural industries. The series brings together established and newer scholars from different disciplines with research users and practitioners from education, youth work, policy making and campaigning.
